Structural Support for Disabled Community in Conakry

During a recent visit to a shelter for people with physical disabilities in Conakry, we were deeply moved by the living conditions we encountered. Around 150 families, more than 750 people, live together in a very small space, struggling each day to survive. With little opportunity to work, many are forced to depend on begging to provide even the most basic needs.

Malnutrition is a serious problem in the community, and to help address this, the Wegdam Foundation has decided to provide structural food support. By donating food on a regular basis, we hope to bring some relief and improve the health and wellbeing of the residents.

It is our mission to stand with communities like this, offering practical help where it is most needed.

The Community Leader

This man is seen as the “mayor” of the community. Despite the difficult circumstances, he takes the lead and looks for ways to support others. One of the things he does is making soap, which he sells to earn a small income. It is a simple but important way to provide for his family and keep hope alive in the community.

Food Support in Conakry

The food in this picture was donated by the Wegdam Foundation. With it, the community can, for example, bake bread to feed their families. Our goal is to provide this kind food support on a regular basis, helping to fight hunger in a structural way.

Dependent on Support

This picture shows people with physical disabilities who can no longer work. Without the ability to earn an income, they are completely dependent on others for their daily existence. This reality shows how vulnerable this group is and why support is so urgently needed.

Baking Their Own Bread

Here you can see residents baking their own bread to feed their families and give to the community. It shows their strength and creativity in finding ways to survive. At the same time, you wonder about the hygienic conditions, a reminder of the challenges they face daily and the need for better facilities.

Learning Skills for a Better Future

At the reception center in Conakry, children of people with physical disabilities are given the opportunity to learn valuable skills. In small workshops, they practice crafts like tailoring, making things like school uniforms to sell, as well as clothing for themselves. By learning a trade they are more likely to get a job later so they can earn an income.
