Why has the
The Wegdam Foundation is a spin-off of the activities of Wegdam Food Link BV, a trade and investment office mainly active on the African continent. When abroad, owner and founder Brian Wegdam often encounters extreme poverty, injustice and harrowing circumstances.
He also sees the good spirit in the many local people that are helping out in overcoming this. The foundation aims to support these local heroes in their efforts to fight poverty and injustice. Below is an overview of some current projects in which the Wegdam Foundation is involved.
Clothes for Sierra Leone
In Sierra Leone we work together with our buyer who buys bales of second-hand imported clothing. Packages are made from this and distributed to the poor population.
Royal Seed Orphanage
This concerns an orphanage just outside the huge city of Accra. Naomi Esi Amoah started to care for orphans, street kids and abandoned children in 2002. In African countries parents are often extremely poor and not able to fend for themselves, let alone their children.
Naomi Eis Amoad started with just 3 kids and expanded her shelter gradually. Through donations but mainly because of her iron will and remarkable courage, she now looks after 198 kids. It is fascinating to see what she has achieved, her ambition and how she fights for her 198 kids as if they are all her own.
Because of the enormous growth, resulting in lack of sufficient space, her organization was forced to move to a larger venue outside Accra. It was beneficial that the property prices were lower compared to those in the center of Accra. Through donations and with the help of local governments, the site now comprises 15 hectare. The compound contains just a basic shelter, currently without power supply. On the premises they also keep about a hundred pigs, that generate some income. Plans are in the works for a pineapple plantation and for keeping laying hens.
The first donations by Wegdam Foundation will be used to connect the premises to the electrical grid. The site is situated outside the urban area which complicates the procedure and will increase the costs significantly. Power is not only necessary for the use of freezers and refrigerators, but also to keep the snakes out. In our western world, it is difficult to imagine a life without electricity, and even harder to imagine having to take care of 198 children without the use of power! Wegdam will continue the support by a monthly donation and with project-based support.
The Madina health clinic is situated in the Madina neighborhood in Accra. In this district there is a lot of poverty. Many people from the countryside settle in this neighborhood, looking for better living conditions. Many women and girls end up pregnant without having the proper knowledge how to look after themselves or their baby. To offer these young mothers a prospect of a better life, this clinic has developed a campaign to educate them the basics of infant care taking and health.
The health clinic desperately needs supplies for all aspects of delivery, labor and the care for mother and child. The Wegdam Foundation is aiming to support the supply of this medical equipment and the first project is distributing a maternity package to all pregnant women.
